The Qur'an names 25 Prophets, peace be upon them. Many are among the most loved boys' names today. Tap a name for its meaning.
A name is one of the first gifts you give your child. The Sunnah offers simple, gentle guidance.
The most beloved names
The most beloved of your names to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman.
Names of the Prophets
“Name yourselves with my name.”
The Prophet ﷺ · Sahih al-Bukhari
He named his own son after Ibrahim (AS): “A boy was born to me tonight, and I named him after my father, Ibrahim” (Sahih Muslim 2315).
A good meaning
The Prophet ﷺ changed names with unpleasant meanings. He renamed a girl whose name meant “disobedient”, calling her Jamilah, “beautiful” (Sahih Muslim 2139).
Choose a name with a meaning you would be glad for your child to carry, and avoid names that suggest servitude to anyone other than Allah.
Jamila: meaning and ArabicOn the seventh day
“Every child is held in pledge for his Aqiqah, which is sacrificed for him on the seventh day; his head is shaved and he is named.”
The Prophet ﷺ · Sunan Abi Dawud 2838
Give Aqiqah in your baby's nameAqiqah is the Sunnah of sacrificing an animal for the sake of Allah to give thanks for a newborn baby. The meat is shared with family, friends and people in need. When you give Aqiqah through Muslim Hands, we carry out the sacrifice on your behalf and the meat feeds families in need.
It is Sunnah to perform Aqiqah on the seventh day after the birth, as the Prophet ﷺ did. If that isn't possible, it can be done on a later seventh day, or at any time after that.
The common Sunnah position is two animals for a boy and one for a girl. Aisha (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ instructed two sheep for a boy and one for a girl (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1513). Through Muslim Hands, Aqiqah for a boy is £160 and for a girl £80. There is no upper limit if you would like to offer more.
Yes. If the Aqiqah wasn't done in the first days, it can still be performed later, even once the child has grown up. Scholars differ on some details, such as whether an adult may give their own Aqiqah, so please ask a scholar you trust if you are unsure.
The hadith of Samurah ibn Jundub mentions naming on the seventh day, together with the Aqiqah and shaving the baby's head (Sunan Abi Dawud 2838). Naming on the day of birth is also fine: the Prophet ﷺ named his son Ibrahim on the night he was born (Sahih Muslim 2315).
Above all, a good meaning. The Prophet ﷺ said the names most beloved to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman (Sahih Muslim 2132), and he changed names that had unpleasant meanings (Sahih Muslim 2139). Names joining Abd to one of Allah's names, and the names of the Prophets and Companions, are much-loved choices. Avoid names that suggest servitude to anyone other than Allah.
No. Many well-loved Muslim names are Persian, Turkish or Urdu, such as Yasmin, Elif and Mahnoor. What matters is that the meaning is good. If you are unsure about a name, ask a scholar you trust.
Shaving the baby's head is recommended. The hair is weighed and its weight in silver is given as Sadaqah, and the sacrifice should be done after the shave or at the same time, not before. The Muslim Hands Aqiqah pack (£180) includes the Sadaqah for your baby's hair and an Islamic parenting book.
We carry out Aqiqahs in Sudan, Mali and Niger. Our local teams check that every animal meets the requirements, then share the meat with those most in need, with priority given to orphans and widows. You will receive a feedback photo, usually within 4–6 weeks, by email or post.
